If Hermione Granger had gotten ahold of a notebook as an alternative of a wand, she’d likely be 1 of these idealistic, around-achiever young Muggles powering the planet in Silicon Valley. The Circle, an adaptation of Dave Eggers’ dystopian sci-fi novel directed by James Ponsoldt, features Emma Watson her probability. In a plot acquainted to 1000’s of rock-climbing, Bi-Ceremony-frequenting denizens of San Francisco, Mae Holland (Watson), a recent university grad, gets a occupation at The Circle, a tech enterprise laden with organic and natural treats, ping-pong tables, and nerdy humor. But The Circle’s motivation to transparency—the company’s motto is “Secrets are Lies”—masks the ambitions of its founders (together with Bailey, played by Tom Hanks) for a full surveillance state. It is up to Mae and her co-worker Kalden (John Boyega) to navigate just what the net can do. The novel, authored by resident Bay Region tech satirist (or curmudgeon) Dave Eggers, features a darkish vision of the net, transparency, and ambition. (Eggers also wrote A Hologram for the King, which Tom Hanks tailored into a movie the place he played an additional center-aged white male in tech—that time, 1 significantly a lot less self-glad.) Observe as the trailer transitions from Facebook recruitment video to Black Mirror in a subject of seconds, all to ominous orchestral swells—but be certain not to glance the net in the eye when you do it. The Circle hits theaters April 28, 2017. Go Back again to Major. Skip To: Begin of Report.
