You know the eagle that conveniently flaps away each time you clamber to the prime of a viewpoint in Assassin’s Creed? Which is me. Other than I am not perched on some church in the center of Florence – I am soaring about the buildings of Paris, zipping in and out of the (weirdly deserted) streets, and ducking under the bridges that punctuate the river Seine. No, I have not dropped my head or chugged way too much absinthe – I am taking part in a somewhat exceptional and remarkable VR tech demo: Eagle Flight VR.  It is really a weird strategy, for certain. Strapping on an Oculus Rift headset, I am quickly immersed in a visually standard variation of the Paris designed for Assassin’s Creed Unity. I am explained to that all I have to do to transfer is tilt my head… and with that, I am soaring by the air. I mainly fly the place I am searching, so as I glance proper I lurch in that path until I straighten my head all over again. It is really disorientating at 1st, but just after a number of minutes I have obtained the dangle of it.

The feeling of pace and independence is amazing. It is really as shut to actually getting capable to fly as everyone this facet of Icarus will ever get, and there’s no hazard of the sun melting my wings. Really soon I am making daring swoops down to street amount and jerking my head to the facet as I zip close to the town streets, in essence ‘canyon running’ the Champs Elysees right before out of the blue ascending into the air, watching the town disappear beneath me. It is really clean, purely natural, easy.  After a number of minutes messing close to, the guys from Ubisoft tell me that it’s time to participate in a activity of Seize the Flag, and I am joined by 3 other gamers. We are split into teams of two, each man or woman appearing as an true eagle as I look at them. The aim is simple – descend to the streets, pick up the flag by flying into it, and bring it again to our ‘base’ – 1st to 3 wins. The twist now, nevertheless, is that each player has a ‘sonic blast’ which incapacitates an additional player if struck.  On a sign from the developers, we swoop in direction of the 1st flag. There is a new urgency to flight now, and not only do head movements steer me, but I am also searching out for foes who are careening by the same town, desperate to snag the flag or consider me down. Whilst I have played CTF hundreds of periods right before, this feels new and utterly thrilling, irrespective of its relative simplicity. There is an unrivalled feeling of independence and regulate that conventional video games simply can not replicate.

The 1st flag goes to my opponents. I am taken out as I swoop down for the flag, and can not get throughout the map speedy sufficient to cease their flag carrier. The next flag way too, just after a bit of a tussle, goes to my opponents. Having said that, the comeback is on – I promptly dart for the 3rd flag, capture it, and continue to be minimal, dodging the buildings and shaking off my pursuers to make the rating 2-one. The fourth flag is taken by my buddy, and I sonic blast one particular of his pursuers to permit him the capture. We are all amount.  Again in the serious world, we need to look weird – like Stevie Question in the center of a specifically intense piano solo – 4 human beings sporting bulky head-gear, furiously jerking their heads close to. Isn’t going to subject – it is down to the closing flag in our digital world and this matters. A single of the opposition has snagged it from the centre of the map, and he’s closing in on his foundation. I blast him and steal the flag, fast descending to street amount. I know I am getting pursued, but I can not look again. I am so shut to my capture place – to delicious victory – and I listen to my teammate chuckle. He is wiped out my pursuer, leaving me a clear run to the foundation.  It is really one particular of the most tense, immersive, and utterly thrilling multiplayer ordeals of my existence. And but it is just a simple VR demo, made to show off the potential of head-regulate. If a little something this standard, which doubles down on the potential to ‘make you fly’ is any indication… it is just an additional explanation why £350/$400 for PlayStation VR (or the VR headset of your preference) could be the ideal £350/$400 you have ever spent.
