Involving Brexit, Donald Trump, and Russia’s ongoing geopolitical ebb, it would appear that the people of Earth are obtaining a referendum on globalization. Which would make tomorrow’s launch of a few fresh new bodies to the ISS specially fascinating. Apart from irony, the vacuum-sealed capsule launching from Baikonur Cosmodrone at 3:20pm EST will have Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy, the European Space Agency’s Thomas Pesquet, and American Peggy Whitson. The latter is a veteran astronaut with 377 cumulative times in house, who will arrive near to beating the current record time in house for a US astronaut, set before this year by Jeff Williams (534 times). But hey, it’s not a competition. This is about international collaboration, and humanity’s journey to turning out to be an off-Earth species. To that conclusion, the a few spacefarers will join Shane Kimbrough of NASA and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Andrey Borisenko in experiments and functions till Expedition fifty finishes in March 2017. Which is really a lot more a starting than an conclusion. Even though Kimbrough, Ryzhikov, and Borisenko hitch a Soyuz experience back to Earth, Whitson will stay on board with Novitskiy and Pesquet, and the ISS will roll about into Expedition 51. When it does, Whitson will choose command of the ISS, turning out to be the 2nd female in history to do so. Tune into the livestream all-around 3pm EST for pre-launch commentary. The moment their capsule reaches low Earth orbit, the trio will commit two times catching up to the ISS prior to docking. You can look at that reside, much too, on November 19, starting off all-around four:15 pm EST. Whitson has a fairly fascinating backstory, so verify out the NASA-developed online video under if you want to relaxed your pre-launch jitters with some very good ole American bootstrappiness (elevated on a farm? verify). The finest element is when she talks about offering chickens to spend for her very first pilot’s license.
